Science and the Parliament - 28 Nov 2007

The ABACUS consortium demonstrated how the warming Arctic affects global climate in this year's "Science and the Parliament", attended by MSPs and Scottish industry representatives. The ABACUS display experiment shows how Arctic soils may start to decompose as a result of the observed warming trends and may release more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

For more information about the event, see the Sci-Fun news item. The display was previously shown at the Royal Society in London, the BA Festival of Science in York and other events (see below).

A demonstration experiment to show the effect of warmer and dryer conditions on arctic soils. As wetlands become dryer, organic material decomposes and releases carbon dioxide. (The carbon dioxide sensors were kindly provided by Vaisala)

Dr Mathew Williams, Dr Matthias Disney and Dr Stephan Matthiesen presented Arctic climate change at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition in London (2-5 July). Interactive experiments, specially designed in cooperation with Brian Cameron (GeoSciences/SciFun), illustrated how changes in the Arctic tundra affect the global climate.

The ABACUS display was part of the NERC stall, which also included displays by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the National Oceanographic Centre (NOC). The ABACUS work was highlighted in NERC's press release

The carbon dioxide sensors used in this experiment were kindly provided by Vaisala; and it is planned that the exhibit will also be used for future public events.
